Fall 2021, Junior year
Partner Project
Bluem Logo.png

For this project, we were instructed to create a concept and design for a homeless veterans support housing complex which included coming up with the concept, logo and name, completing in-depth research, designing almost the entirety of the interior while considering the veterans' needs, and presenting our findings and completed work to our professors, peers, friends, family, and the community.

Bluem House follows the Mid-Century Modern design style, incorporating clean lines and simple forms to create a comfortable and calming atmosphere for residents, employees, and guests. The design is heavily influenced by the concepts of universal design, sustainability, and biophilic design, with an effort to bring nature into the space year-round.

While utility and function are a priority in the choice of furnishings and fixtures throughout the space, there is no compromise to the comfort and aesthetic of these pieces. The design also focuses on the mental, physical, and social well-being of residents, with multiple resources available to promote these three facets of health, including a medical clinic, psychiatric office, and multiple social spaces to encourage social interaction on many different levels.

The multiple interior spaces are cohesive through a unified palette of blue tones and light cream and gray, offset with accents of desaturated red and green tones. The furnishings and materials throughout the space include natural wood and stone textures, as well as metallic elements and soft fabrics. The materials and finishes also balance light and dark tones throughout the interior, creating a visual contrast and clear delineation of spatial layout. Overall, the elements and concepts used in the design of Bluem House create an atmosphere of comfort and safety for all who reside in the space.

This project was completed by both Michaela Moen and I over the course of the semester. We collaborated on everything but took certain aspects to complete on our own. There are two apartment sizes (Studio and Micro) along with the large central community center and social spaces. Michalea and I each took an apartment size to complete entirely on our own, mine being the Studio and hers the Micro. I have included images of just my completed studio apartment typical.

We received an "exceeded expectations" grade on this project.
